The STEAM Design Challenges in this book follow engineering practices to teach students in Grade 5 to solve a problem by designing, creating, and justifying their designs. They also allow art to support and enhance the learning of science and math while the engineering process is followed.
These engaging STEAM lessons:
- Integrate the Next Generation Science Standards and national standards from other disciplines
- Enhance learning across various disciplines
- Facilitate students in collaborating to solve real-world scenarios
- Promote critical thinking, analytical thinking, and reflective thinking
- Incorporate the Five Es Instructional Model (engage, explore, explain, elaborate, evaluate)
- Are classroom tested
Engineering Design Process
The lessons in this book are intended to support the engineering design process in which teachers become a facilitator by encouraging and guiding students to work as a team to find a creative solution to a real-world problem without providing step-by-step instructions. Students are inspired to act as scientists and engineers through the use of sketches, diagrams, mathematical relationships, and literacy connections. By creating their very own models and products based on background information from their studies, students are immediately engaged through a meaningful, rewarding lesson.
More about the lessons
Each lesson begins by presenting students with a design challenge scenario in order to immediately excite students with a real-world situation that they are on a mission to solve. Students are then given a dilemma, mission, and blueprint design sheet and are asked to collaborate with team members to create several prototypes. Students present their prototypes to their teacher, construct their design, test their design, engage in a class discussion about their design, and then modify their design. Finally, teams create a justification piece in order to sell their new prototype (ex. persuasive letter, video, advertisement etc.).
About the Authors
The Steam Dreamers, a group of four classroom teachers, desired to create more interactive learning environments and science classrooms through student-centered problem-solving lessons. They created this collection of cross-curricular design challenge lessons to provide teachers and students with real-world scenarios that are driven by core learning standards and enriched through the inclusion of literacy and the arts.
Magtronix™ Extension Set
$29.99
Children piece together circuit blocks in different combinations to become more familiar with how a circuit works while also developing problem-solving skills. Starter Set contains on switch, battery pack, buzzer, light, 5 direction pieces and a helicopter piece. The Expansion Pack challenges students to make bigger and more complex electronic circuits by adding more electronic blocks, lights and switches. Each set includes activity sheet with circuit ideas. Batteries not included
STEM Starters, Zip-Line Racers
$14.99
This activity kit challenges students to create a propeller-powered device that travels along a string. The essential pieces, propellers, rubber bands, and string, are provided; it's up to the young scientists to determine the best materials to use in order to propel their racer effectively. Using the engineering design process students will create, evaluate, and redesign their simple machine until their objective is met. Includes enough materials to begin 6 racers. 38 pieces total.
STEM Challenges Bundle
$35.98
Engaging, fun and effective, these challenge cards provide a hands-on approach to STEM instruction. Features activities that can be performed independently, in small groups, or as a whole-class activity. 30 cards per boxed set. Grades 2–5
Stepping Into STEM, Grade 5
$17.99
These dynamic resources provide guided lessons to integrate project-based learning into your science, technology, engineering, and math curriculum. Each unit provides background information for teachers and students and moves from teacher-directed activities toward more open-ended activities. The culminating activity in each unit allows students to design their own unique “invention” or conduct an experiment of their own creation. Students will be challenged to work collaboratively, using a design process that helps them “step into STEM” with greater competence and confidence. 160 pages.
Stepping Into STEM, Grade 3

Just Add Glue™
$24.95
An exciting Science + Art kit that is sure to stretch your imagination! Create different forms of super stretchy polymers and make them bounce! Create putties that can be picked up, stretched, and even rolled into a ball that bounces. Using the same ingredients create an array of creative crafts that you can keep, like crystals and window clings! Learn about states of matter including liquids and polymers. This STEAM kit is a basic introduction to chemistry and material engineering for ages 6 and up with adult supervision.
SuperScience® STEM Activity Pack, Grades 1-2
$49.99
This comprehensive pack features 15 engaging topics in life, physical, and earth sciences that support the Next Generation Science Standards. Each topic comes in a self-contained folder with an anchor text from the award-winning SuperScience magazine, multiple copies of two hands-on investigations, companion reproducible recording sheets, management tips, plus links to an online video and bonus activities.
STEM Play
$24.95
Most early childhood teachers are using learning centers in the classroom, but do not approach them in ways that fully support a variety of learning opportunities. This book approaches learning centers through the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) lens, and shares how themes can be integrated into centers to promote creativity and higher-level thinking. STEM Play provides varied activities for the most common centers: Art, blocks, dramatic play, literacy, math, science, music and movement. Full of beautiful, full-color photos that show the activities in real early childhood classrooms, teachers can easily use the book's ideas immediately in their curriculum. STEM Play also includes a “How To” section for teachers who wish to expand on the STEM focus and use themed activities in their learning centers.
StoryTime STEM, Grades PreK-K
$12.99
What better way to get young children excited about STEM than through beloved nursery rhymes? Children explore ways to keep Humpty Dumpty from breaking after a fall, design a system for Jack and Jill to bring water down the hill without carrying it, build a catapult to help the cow jump over the moon, and many more. Each nursery rhyme comes with three STEM activities and companion recording sheets. A joyful way to spark a love of science in little learners!
Creative Investigations in Art
$18.95
While the visual and performing arts are powerful curricular companions to early STEM experiences, educators may not have the tools and resources to introduce art beyond painting and drawing. Creative Investigations in Early Art provides them with an inquisitive, explorative approach to boost young learners' creativity and critical-thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills through artistic expression.
Each chapter provides educators with practical ideas for intentionally fostering young children's hands-on, minds-on explorations connecting the following areas of the creative arts to STEM:
- Music and Movement
- Dramatic Arts
- Visual Arts
- Artists and Artworks
Brackitz® Gears, Sprockets & Chains
$149.99
Our newest module, Gears, Sprockets & Chains expands the “engineering go power” of the base Structures module. Gears and chains (like the ones in bicycles) are simple machines. When students learn to design and build with gears they gain hands-on understanding of the principles of motion. Five PreK-6 lessons are available for specific use with this module. Each activity is focused on solving real-world challenges using creativity and problem-based learning approach.
